IRELAND: The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Cowen, has said the Government has no "Plan B" should it fail to secure an agreement by June on the EU constitution, reports Arthur Beesley, Political Reporter.

With Mr Cowen set to brief EU foreign ministers next Monday on resumed inter-governmental conference, he said the draft treaty produced by the Convention on the Future of Europe was the only option on the agenda.

"Plan B, in the aftermath of not getting this constitutional treaty sorted out during our presidency, is ... a blank piece of paper. Obviously we're all approaching this final stage of negotiation in a spirit of compromise and the need to ensure European solidarity is demonstrated by a successful outcome." Mr Cowen was speaking in Dublin after a meeting with his Danish counterpart, Mr Per Stig Moller, who said the Government's approach was the right one.

"I think the way we are cutting the cake is the right way to do it."
