A third man has been arrested in connection with an incident in Cork in which a mother of three was knocked down and killed by a stolen car. He was held for questioning at Togher Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act but was released without charge. Gardai said they were preparing a file for the DPP.

Mrs June Atkins (42) was retur ning with her husband to her home on Pearse Road, Ballyphe hane, on Sunday when the tragedy happened. She was crossing the street when she was hit by a speeding red Mitsubishi which had earlier been stolen from St Patrick's Quay. She was the fifth person to be killed by a stolen car in Cork this year.

Gardai arrested a man in Knocknaheeny yesterday in relation to the incident, bringing to three the number of people detained so far. A 26-year-old man was arrested near the scene soon after the fatality, and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

It is understood the man had been given temporary release from Cork prison three weeks ago while serving a six-month sentence for jumping bail. He has been returned to prison by gardai.
