TO avoid regular weeding we can in places resort to mulching spreading a layer of organic matter on the soil surface which will suppress weed growth. Mulching will not be any use in places where we want seedlings to appear, i.e. in a border where annuals such as opium poppies or biennials such as foxgloves are required.
I am not an advocate of sheet plastic or of plantex. That look is too sterile and is only for those who hate their gardens.
A favourite mulching material widely available is mushroom compost. One word of warning this can sometimes be high in lime content so it should be used sparingly on erieaceous plants.
