An estimated 2,500 people have gathered outside Mountjoy Prison in support of two Socialist Party politicians jailed for their role in anti-bin charge protests.
Dublin West TD, Mr Joe Higgins, and Fingal councillor Ms Clare Daly were jailed last week for defying a court order requiring them not blockade bin lorries refusing to make collections from households which had not paid their bin charge.
Around 2,000 people congregated at the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, before moving to Mountjoy, where another 500 people were demonstrating.
The crowd included Mr Higgins' 85-year-old mother, Ellen, who had travelled from her home in Lispole, Co Kerry, to visit her son.
Socialist Party speakers at the march were joined by trade unionists Mr Mick O'Reilly of the ATGWU, Mr Denis Keane of the CPSU and Mr Brendan Macken of the Dublin Council of Trade Unions.
Ms Rosie Kane, Member of the Scottish Parliament and former Westminster MP, and leader of Britain's anti-poll tax campaign, Mr Dave Nellist, also spoke at the rally.
Socialist Party councillor Ms Ruth Coppinger - who is one of the organisers of the Fingal Anti-Bin Tax Campaign (FABTC) - today said the jailing of her colleagues would not "behead" the campaign.
"The campaign is alive and well and we won't be intimidated ... the people will not bow down in the face of this sort of intimidation," she said.
The only protest against the bin charges today was outside the Fingal County Council dump in Watery Lane, Swords.
Around 30 protestors delayed collections for a number of hours before the picket broke up. FABTC says the blockade showed protesters were not deflected from their campaign despite the council's High Court injunction which led to the jailing of the two politicians.
