Public transport companies have advised passengers to be aware that many services will stop operating earlier than usual today, on what is traditionally one of the busiest travel days of the year.
Most Dublin Bus services will cease at 9pm, with the exception of some services to Heuston, Dublin airport and Dublin Port.
Bus Éireann will operate a normal timetable until 9pm when its services are suspended until St Stephen’s Day.
Most Irish Rail services will also end at 9pm and there will be no rail services across Dart, commuter and Intercity on Christmas Day and St Stephens' Day. The Luas will stop at 8pm until 9am on Monday.
AA Roadwatch has warned motorists to expect delays in city and town centres and around major retail parks which are busy with last-minute shoppers. Today is expected to be the busiest day on the country's roads.
Unlike last year, the weather is not disrupting travel and the country's roads are free from snow and ice.
“Last Christmas Day, the lowest December air temperature ever in Ireland was measured as -17.5C at Straide, Co Mayo” said Aoife Carragher, head of AA Roadwatch.
“This year temperatures are expected to hover around a balmy 10C for the big day, and while motorists will be much more confident as they set out on their journey home for Christmas, it is still vital to keep road safety at the forefront of our minds during the festive period.”
Motorists are advised to keep their speed down, ensure all passengers wear a seat belt and never to drink and drive.
Yesterday was the busiest day for air travel and more than 620,000 people are expected to use the airport during the Christmas period with January 2nd being the second busiest day there.
