Thousands of hurling fans are on the move from the south east today as Kilkenny and Waterford gear up for their much-anticipated clash in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final at Croke Park.
Kilkenny are aiming for a hat-trick of All-Ireland hurling wins with Waterford at long odds to take the championship.
The neighbouring counties will meet today in the final for the first time since 1963. The last time a Waterford side lifted the Liam MacCarthy cup was in 1959.
A Kilkenny win today would make Brian Cody’s team the first to clock up three successive hurling final wins since Cork in 1978.
Iarnród Éireann’s special services for the match at Croke Park have sold out and traffic is likely to be very heavy on the M7/M9 and on the N11 before and after the game.
Parking in the Drumcondra area near the stadium is very limited, gardai have warned.
There have been some alterations to Longford/Mullingar/Maynooth trains today for “operational issues”, Iarnrod Eireann said. The 4.10pm Pearse to Longford and the 7.10pm Longford to Connolly trains are cancelled.
In other travel news, ferry sailings across the Irish Sea have returned to normal today after disruption yesterday due to heavy rain and poor weather conditions.
