Three men have been arrested in a Garda-assisted inquiry into hoax terror alerts including the sending of suspect packages to Downing Street.

Two men were detained in the Strathclyde area of Scotland during an investigation into hoax bomb calls, email bombardments and the sending of suspect packages containing, or purporting to contain, toxic material throughout the UK, the Fife Constabulary said today.

Included among those who received suspect packages were Downing Street and St Andrews University, police said.

Another man (53) was arrested in Dublin on Monday during the investigation. He was released on Tuesday and a file is being sent to the DPP, a Garda spokeswoman said. Gardaí are continuing to co-operate with British police in the investigation she said.
