Three people were critically injured when a train struck a vehicle on a level crossing in eastern England today, Network Rail said.
The train, a National Express East Anglia service from Sudbury to Marks Tey, hit a sewage tanker at about 5.35 pm on a crossing between Sudbury and Bures in Suffolk.
Suffolk Police said the train, which had about 20 passengers on board, had derailed but remained upright.
"Initial reports suggest that three people were critically injured, including the train driver. There is also walking wounded," a Network Rail spokesman said.
"The crossing is a user worked crossing with gates and telephone. The Network Rail signaller did not receive a phone call from the user of the crossing."
Police said the 38-year-old driver of the lorry had been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.
