Three people have died on the roads over the weekend in counties Limerick and Meath. Their deaths bring to 321 the number of people who have died this year on the Republic's roads this year.

A pedestrian in his mid-20s died after he was struck by a car on the N2 Ashbourne by-pass in Co Meath, shortly after 4.30am yesterday.

The man was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, where he was later pronounced dead.

In Co Limerick, two people lost their lives in separate crashes.

Noreen Casey a 16-year-old from Boher in Co Limerick, died and a 15-year-old girl was critically injured in a single vehicle crash near the main gate of Glenstal Abbey outside the Co Limerick village of Murroe early on Saturday morning.

Ms Casey, who died at the scene, was driving a red Toyota Corolla, which crashed into a tree.

The injured girl, from St Patrick's Road in Limerick city, was a back-seat passenger. The crash took place sometime between 6.30am and 6.50am.

She is still being treated at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital, where her condition is said to be "critical".

A 16-year-old boy who was sitting in the front passenger seat of the car escaped with minor injuries.

It is understood the teenagers were at a house party in Murroe before they went for a drive in the car, which gardaí believe belonged to somebody at the party.

They were travelling back towards Murroe when the crash happened.

Less than 24 hours later, 29-year-old Willie McGinley from Athlone, Co Westmeath, was killed when the van he was driving hit a ditch near the Co Limerick village of Rathkeale.

The crash happened at 3.30am yesterday when Mr McGinley's van left the road at Kyletaun, Rathkeale.

The married father of three was thrown from the vehicle. He was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital where he later died.

A Garda car that happened to be on patrol in the area was first to arrive on the scene.

Gardaí at Askeaton, Co Limerick, Garda station are anxious to speak to anybody who may have witnessed the accident. The station is contactable at 061- 601630.

These latest two deaths bring to 15 the number of people killed on Limerick roads this year, the same figure as for the whole of last year.
