Three people were in Garda custody in Cork last night after £100,000 worth of cannabis herb was seized in the city centre. The seizure followed a surveillance operation.

The three are a South African woman in her 30s, a 26year-old Englishman and a 25-year-old native of Sierra Leone. They arrived at Cork Airport from the UK yesterday afternoon, watched by members of the Cork City Divisional Drugs Squad and Customs and Excise officials.

They were followed to the centre of the city and arrested at Mac Curtain Street under Section 2 of the Drugs Trafficking Act. The woman was taken to Gurranbraher Garda station for questioning, the two men to Mayfield. Under the Act, they can be held for up to seven days.

Meanwhile, a file is to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions following the seizure of an estimated £10,000 worth of cannabis resin in Youghal, Co Cork, at the weekend.
