Gardaí in Dublin arrested three men yesterday over the discovery of up to €5 million worth of heroin which they believe is part of a multi-million drug trafficking ring being run by a man in prison.

Officers from the Garda Organised Crime Unit and the Clondalkin Drugs Unit discovered around 20 kilograms of heroin in a storage company in an industrial estate in Clondalkin at about 5pm.

Two men, aged 24 and 36, were detained following the discovery.

In a follow-up search on a parked car in Crumlin, another five kilograms of heroin worth an estimated €1m was seized.

A third man, believed to be in his 30s, was arrested a short time later.

Gardaí are understood to have been targeting a network of heroin dealers which is being run by an individual in prison and have described the arrests as “significant”.

The men who were arrested are currently detained in Clondalkin and Ballyfermot Garda Stations under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking Act), 1996.

The three men can be held in custody without charge for up to seven days.
