Gardaí in Cork are investigating two stabbing incidents in the city and county in the early hours of yesterday morning.
In Dublin, a man was in a critical condition after a stabbing in Crumlin.
A 20-year-old man underwent emergency surgery in hospital yesterday morning after he was stabbed on the north side of Cork city.
The incident occurred at 12.05am yesterday when he was stabbed in the chest after an argument took place outside a house in Mount St Joseph's Heights near Gurranebraher.
The man was brought to Cork University Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. A hospital spokesman described his condition as stable.
Former independent Councillor Con O'Leary said this was the first stabbing incident in the area in many years and that people were surprised by it.
"The overall Gurranebraher area is quiet," Mr O'Leary said. "It is a mature area with young people who grew up here buying homes here and starting families.
"I heard the area where the stabbing occurred was cordoned off and the road was blocked."

In Mallow, gardaí are investigating a stabbing incident which took place in the St Joseph's area of the town at about 3.30am yesterday.
Units of gardaí and ambulance attended the scene and a man in his 20s was brought to Cork University Hospital. His condition is described as stable.
Gardaí at Mallow station are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact them at (022) 31450.
Meanwhile in Dublin, a man in his 20s remained "critical but stable" in hospital last night following a stabbing yesterday morning.
The man, aged 26, was stabbed a number of times outside a house on Cashel Road in Crumlin, following a row.
The stabbing occurred at about 4.30am and he was brought to St James's Hospital.
