A Polish national and two women were killed in three separate accidents over the weekend, while gardaí have also asked the public to assist them by notifying them of suspected drink-drivers.

On Sunday morning, a Polish national, Mr Pawel Kowalski (21), with an address in Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, was killed when the car in which he was a passenger went out of control and crashed at Cam Brideswell, Ballyforan, Co Roscommon.

There were three men in the car at the time, and both the driver and the second passenger received serious injuries. They were taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.

At 11.45 p.m. on Friday night, a woman passenger in a van was killed when the vehicle collided with a truck at Carheeny More, Gort, Co Galway.

The male driver of the van was taken to University Hospital Galway. The driver of the truck was not injured.

Gardaí from Kilkenny station have also appealed for information about an accident in which a woman died on Friday morning.

A young woman driver was killed when her car collided with an articulated lorry on the N10 at Flagmount, Gowran.

Anyone who has information in relation to this accident is asked to contact gardaí at Kilkenny station at 056-7775000.

The deaths bring to 358 the number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year, compared with 336 for the whole of last year.

They come as gardaí appealed to the public to inform them of suspected drink-drivers.

They released figures which showed that the number of people arrested for drink-driving in the first week of the Christmas road safety campaign was significantly higher than last year. Some 297 arrests were made for drink-driving in week one of this year's safety campaign.This compares with 249 for the same period last year, a rise of 19 per cent.
