Three men were tonight charged in connection with the seizure of 15 million contraband cigarettes in Northern Ireland following a probe into alleged dissident republican crime.

The haul, which could have cost the Exchequer around £2.5 million in lost duty, was seized yesterday during a planned swoop in north Armagh.

The raids were carried out by members of the Police Service of Northern Ireland's Organised Crime Branch and officials from Revenue and Customs.

The PSNI said a 49-year-old man and a 36-year-old had been charged with concealing chargeable duty goods with intent to defraud and possessing criminal property.

A 45-year-old man had further been charged with carrying chargeable duty goods with intent to defraud and possessing criminal property.

All three men are due to appear before Banbridge Magistrates Court in Co Down in the morning.

Earlier Detective Chief Superintendent Phil Aitken said the seizure had been the latest in a series of successes which were designed to break up criminal gangs and "prevent them from making substantial profits through their illegal sales of cigarettes or other commodities."
