Their deaths bring to nine the number of fatalities on roads in the Republic over the past four days and to 107 the number of deaths this year.

Mr Edward Culleton (24) died when his car struck a ditch at Campile, New Ross, late on Saturday night.

There were no other vehicles involved in the accident, which occurred at 11 p.m. Gardaí in New Ross are investigating the crash. Mr Culleton was from Broomhill, Fethard-on-Sea.

In Blanchardstown, west Dublin, a second fatal accident involving a motorcyclist happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Mr Mark Grogan (25), from Sheepmor Way, Blanchardstown,died after his motorbike hit a kerb. The accident occurred at Blanchardstown Road South at 4.28 a.m. He was brought to James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown.

Gardaí at Crumlin in Dublin are investigating the death of motorcyclist near his home after a road traffic accident.

They are appealing for witnesses to the crash in which Mr Jason Carpenter (28) was killed.

Mr Carpenter from John McCormack Avenue died in a collision with a car on the avenue at about 7.15 p.m. on Friday evening. He was brought to St James's Hospital where he died.

Some 5,500 checkpoints were being mounted over the weekend in an attempt to reduce dangerous driving.

Operation Taisteal is as extensive as the four-day similar checkpoint operation operated over the Easter weekend a fortnight ago.

It started on Friday but was overshadowed before it began by the six deaths on the roads last Thursday, including those of two children.
