Three Dublin men who were charged in connection with the discovery of 11/2 tonnes of homemade explosives in Howth last week were freed on bail by the Special Criminal Court yesterday. )

Mr Eamonn Flanagan (42), of The Square, Skerries, Mr Seamus McLoughlin (66), of Balkill Park, Howth, and Mr Joseph Dillon (52), of Green Lawn, Skerries, were freed on independent bail of £10,000 each and their own bonds of £5,000 each.

They were ordered to report once a week to their local Garda stations and to surrender their passports.

The men were charged after gardai discovered the explosives at a disused fish shop in Howth last Thursday.

Mr Flanagan and Mr McLoughlin were charged with possession of an explosive substance with intent to endanger life at West Pier, Howth, on January 5th. Mr Dillon was charged with possession of an explosive substance with intent to endanger life at Golflinks Road, Bettystown, Co Meath, on the same date.

They were remanded until February 18th.
