The three men arrested by gardaí this morning over an assault earlier this month that left a cyclist with serious injuries have been freed without charge.

A Garda spokesman said a file would be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions in relation to the two men- aged aged 22 and 26 - who had been freed early this afternoon.

The third man, aged 24, had his period of detention extended for a further six hours, but was freed this evening. A file on his case will also be sent to the DPP.

The men were questioned in Pearse Street station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The attack took place on Grafton Street in Dublin city centre on Saturday, April 13th.

The victim, Mr Barry Duggan (35), a librarian from Co Sligo living in Rathmines, was apparently attacked by a group of young men when he lost his balance on his bike and fell into their gathering.

He was dragged down nearby Lemon Street and badly beaten and kicked about the head and body before being left unconscious.

He is in a stable condition in St James's Hospital.
