Three people remain in a critical condition with severe burns in St James's Hospital this afternoon after being rescued from a fire in an underground car park early yesterday morning.

The two men and a woman, all in their 30s, are believed to have been sleeping rough at the Smithfield Gate apartment complex in Dublin.

Firemen took three hours to bring the fire under control. Six fire units and five ambulances attended the scene after being notified of the fire at 5.25am yesterday.

The electricity and water supplies to the building were lost in the fire, and residents had been given alternative accommodation in a nearby hotel.

The outer walls of the building were badly marked by smoke, and a Spar shop on the ground floor was forced to close due to the extensive damage.

Gardai are conducting an investigation into how the fire started.
