The robbery happened around midnight as the manager of the Red Store pub in Youghal was locking up the premises.

The manager, who is in his 30s, ­ was confronted by three men in a car park at Dolphin's Square at the rear of the pub and threatened.

It is understood that one of the raiders may have had a knife and the bar manager was forced to hand over the day's takings.

The man was uninjured but the three man gang got away with what gardaí describe as a substantial sum of money.

The area was cordoned off and Garda technical experts have begun a forensic examination of the scene.

Gardai have appealed to anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in the area to contact them at Youghal Garda station on 024-92200.
