THREE out of five people arrested by gardai investigating the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin last June were being detained in Dublin last night. Two others were released by gardai late last night.
The five, including one woman, were arrested in Cork and taken to Lucan and Ronanstown Garda stations in Dublin yesterday.
All five are believed to have given Cork addresses and to have been living in Cork, but two are originally from Dublin. The group is understood to include a husband and wife.
The five were initially held at Anglesea Street Garda station in Cork before being taken to Dublin. Three were still being held last night under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
The group brings to more than 100 the number of people arrested for questioning by the Lucan team since the murder investigation began.
It is understood that they may face drug related charges but there were no indications last night that any was considered central to the murder, which is believed to have involved a core of about six people.
Garda sources said the group was arrested as detectives traced links between drug importers in Cork and a drugs supply network in Dublin.
