When nominations closed yesterday for the election on October 15th of Chancellor of the National University of Ireland, there were three candidates: the former Taoiseach, Dr Garret FitzGerald, Mr Patrick Jones, from Carlow, and Mr Pierce Purcell, from Clonmel.
