Two men and a woman appeared in court yesterday following arrests made in connection with Garda security monitoring in the lead-up to anticipated May Day protests.

The three, all UK nationals, were granted bail under strict conditions.

Mr Neil Ketchley (19), an A-level student, Mr Giuseppe Girardi (38), a resettlement worker at a hostel for the homeless, and Ms Polly Murphy (20), unemployed, were all charged with trespass at a private residence in Lower Leeson Street, Dublin, on Tuesday night.

Mr Girardi was also charged with unlawful possession of implements which could be used for criminal damage, namely cans of spray paint and stencils used for anti-globalisation graffiti.

Dublin District Court heard they were arrested at the house at 10.15 p.m. and taken to Harcourt Terrace Garda station. They made no reply after they were charged.

Insp John Quirke objected to bail as when they were initially arrested, they all gave "no fixed abode" as their addresses. Later they gave addresses in the UK which gardaí had not been able to establish were correct.

"They are people from outside the jurisdiction and I believe that they will abscond and not turn up for trial if given bail," Insp Quirke said. In Mr Ketchley's case, there was a likelihood of far more serious charges.

Their solicitor asked that bail be fixed as in two of the cases, they were relatively minor charges and the fact that they were from outside the jurisdiction was not a sufficient reason for refusing bail.

Ms Murphy had given an address at Hornsley Lane Gardens, Highgate, London, where she lives with her mother and is in receipt of a job seeker's allowance of £43.

Judge Patrick Brady fixed their own bail at €450 each with independent sureties of €1,500 each. The conditions he imposed were that gardaí must first be satisfied of their addresses, that they give 24 hours notice to gardaí of who their bailspersons will be, sign on three times a week at the Bridewell Garda Station and surrender their passports.

He remanded the three in custody with consent to bail as fixed, with the two men to appear in a week at Cloverhill District Court and the woman at Dublin District Court. He ordered that they fill in statements of means before applications for free legal aid could be considered.
