Golf:The week that began with the "sadness" of Tiger Woods finalising his divorce from wife Elin got that little bit better today when the world number one shot a 65 to take the early clubhouse lead at the Barclays.

He opened his round in the best possible fashion with a birdie at the first hole and picked up further shots at the third, fifth and seventh.

Hole 12 saw his one dropped shot of the day but he bounced back with two successive birdies and then rolled in an eight-foot putt at the last to move to the summit of the leaderboard at Ridgewood Country Club.

Ryan Palmer was level with Woods with four to play after an astonishing front nine which saw him birdie the first five holes.

He gained further ground at the seventh and eighth and, though he gave those two shots back on a dismal 10th hole, he recorded another birdie at the 13th and was six under with four to play.

Vaughan Taylor joined him in a share of first, while Brian Gay, Ryan Palmer and Australian Adam Scott are a shot adrift.

Rory McIlroy leads the two-strong Irish challenge after birdies at the 17th, fifth and eighth led to a 68 but Pádraig Harrington dropped shots at the fifth and sixth after four birdies had him on course for a 67.
