Time for Newport festival fare at Kinsale

Earlier this month the Kinsale Festival of Fine Food in Newport, Rhode Island, took place. On Thursday the Newport Rhode Island Festival of Fine Food begins in Kinsale.

The two towns have been twinned since 1999. Both rely heavily on tourism and both pride themselves on the quality of food they can provide.

Kinsale, of course, has its Good Food Circle which amounts to a quality mark for all the participating restaurants in the scenic port.

Newport has something similar. The idea of the two-way food fest was to bring Kinsale chefs to Newport and vice versa.

By all accounts, the fare served up by 11 Kinsale chefs during their visit to Rhode Island went down a treat.

The 11 Newport chefs who arrive here on Thursday are promising no less and will set out their wares with a "sumptuous opening buffet" at the Trident Hotel.

The 27-strong US party will be led by Mr Paul Crowley, of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, who is also a restaurateur.

The guest of honour will be Mayor Richard Sardella of Newport, who runs a very fine Italian restaurant.

The Irish connection is good for Newport. On St Patrick's Day, 70,000 people joined in the fun and filled the local restaurants.

Kinsale is now hoping for an influx of epicureans. If all goes according to plan, says Mr Denis Kieran, one of the organisers, the festival will close with a traditional American clambake on Sunday.
