Jakarta - An Indonesian court yesterday sentenced the East Timorese militia boss, Mr Eurico Guterres, to six months in jail for inciting violence last year in Indonesian West Timor, a verdict likely to infuriate human rights groups and the international community.
Mr Guterres, leader of Aitarak, one of several pro-Jakarta militia groups that devastated East Timor after it voted for independence in 1999, expressed defiance after the relatively light sentence. "Go ahead, send me to jail, six months is too short. If it's necessary give me 100 years," he told reporters. He may only spend a few weeks in jail as he has already spent several months in detention.
