JAKARTA At least one person was believed killed and six injured in clashes between East Timorese youths and police in East Timor's second town of Baucau, church sources and residents quoted by Reuter said yesterday. An unconfirmed report said nine had died.

Police apparently opened fire on a crowd of several thousand that was throwing stones in protests over the alleged tearing of a picture of the Virgin Mary by a Muslim settler on Sunday.

According to Ms Carmel Budiardjo, of the London based Indonesian Human Rights Association, protesters yesterday demonstrated outside the Indonesian parliament over the shooting last Friday in a Jakarta police station of another Timorese, who later died.
