Tipperary GAA star killed in crash

The GAA fraternity in the county heard of the Shannon Rovers star's death yesterday morning. The county star, from Nenagh was an accomplished hurler and footballer and was returning from Limerick after training when the collision occurred near Birdhill on the main N7 Limerick to Dublin road .

The car Darcy was driving collided with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

His remains were removed to Limerick Regional Hospital, where a postmortem examination took place yesterday.

The driver of the truck was taken to Nenagh hospital following the incident and treated for shock.

One of Shannon Rovers most promising young players, Darcy, along with clubmates, Philip Donnellan and George Hannigan were part of the Tipperary U-21 football panel which lost narrowly to Kerry in the Munster final last Saturday in Ardfinnan.

Darcy also lined out in the blue and gold for Tipperary 24 hours later when he came on as a substitute in Tipperary's three point win over Antrim in a division four clash, also in Ardfinnan.

He was a past pupil of Borrisokane Community College and was about to celebrate his 21st birthday next July.

The youngest of three boys, he is survived by his parents Seán and Nancy and brothers Roy and Lee.
