Community Development: Joint Winners: Childhood Development Initiative & Ruhama: The Childhood Development Initiative was founded out of concern for the future of the children in the four west Dublin communities of Tallaght West: Brookfield, Fettercairn, Killinarden and Jobstown.
In spite of the numerous efforts made, the majority of young people in the area were still not receiving sufficient developmental and educational support to reach their full potential, both now as children and later in adult life.
The project creates the educational and home supports that in turn create the conditions that enable young people to pursue their own aims.
Ruhama was established in 1989 by the Good Shepherd Sisters and Our Lady of Charity Sisters to reach out to women involved in prostitution and other forms of commercial sexual exploitation to offer a personalised and individual service to address their immediate needs and to help them explore alternatives to prostitution.
It also raises awareness of the issues that surround prostitution in an effort to influence attitudes, practices and policies that allow the exploitation of women through trafficking and prostitution.
