Alexandria - An Egyptian toddler who received a six-month jail sentence for causing bodily harm to a playmate may not have to serve time after all. Legal officials said yesterday that an appeal court had decided to reopen the case of 18-month-old Ayman Khadari who was found guilty in absentia of pushing over and hurting his neighbour's 2 1/2-year-old daughter.

Ayman's father, Mr Hussam al-Khadari, went to court on Saturday to appeal, carrying the boy in his arms. He sat him on the bench reserved for the accused and told a stunned judge: "That's him," causing laughter in the courtroom.
