THE COUNCILLOR and former mayor of Kerry Toireasa Ferris is expected to be selected this weekend as the Sinn Féin candidate for the Munster area in the next European elections.

A convention takes place this weekend in Tralee and Ms Ferris (28) is the only name going forward. She has been nominated to contest the European South elections in Kerry, Cork and Waterford. The 2004 candidate, David Cullinane from Waterford city, also supports Ms Ferris. Around 100 delegates are eligible to vote.

Ms Ferris, a law graduate who holds a master's degree from Queen's University, Belfast, and the daughter of Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris, holds seats on Kerry County Council and on Tralee Town Council.

Mr Cullinane got just over 32,600 votes in 2004 in the constituency which elected Brian Crowley, Simon Coveney and Kathy Sinnott.
