The Irish Times photographer Bryan O'Brien was presented with the 13th Picture Editors' Award in the Guildhall in London last night. The first Irish-based photographer to win the prestigious award, O'Brien received the BG Group Photographer of the Year award after being shortlisted with three other finalists from over 200 entries.

Glyn Genin, chairman of the Picture Editors' Award, said his achievement was "the first time the award will cross the Irish Sea.

"It's a remarkable achievement for Bryan," he said.

The other three finalists included photographers from the Associated Press, the London Times and the South West News Service.

O'Brien received a cash prize of £4,000. His award-winning photographs will be displayed on www.pictureawards.net from today.
