KENYA: A British honeymooner was recovering in a Kenyan hospital last night after being stabbed by a German tourist who ran amok in a luxury beachside hotel.
Witnesses said Olaf Klinkusch (41) went berserk during a drinking spree at the all-inclusive resort in Malindi, on Kenya's Indian Ocean coast.
He murdered a Swiss holidaymaker before committing suicide at the Tropical African Dream Village Hotel on Saturday night.
Two European women, including Ms Lisa Seaman (32), who was married at the hotel days earlier, were being treated for stab wounds at a Mombasa hospital yesterday. Both were said to be in a stable condition.
Mr Alex Rono, a local police spokesman, said Klinkusch had been drinking for several hours with other guests in the bar before he became violent at about 10.30 p.m. "The man then stabbed and wounded two women. He then stabbed to death a Swiss man who tried to protect the women," he said.
The Swiss tourist was named as Mr Hugo Meischerhaus.
Klinkusch locked himself in a hotel storeroom, where he committed suicide by stabbing himself in the stomach and throat, added Mr Rono.
Mr Mark Seaman, Lisa's husband of four days, said the couple were confronted by the German as he fled into the hotel grounds from the bar. "He took a large knife from a bag he had on his shoulder and stabbed Lisa ... It went through her stomach," added Mr Seaman (31). "I've spent today sitting by my wife as she goes in and out of surgery but the main thing is that she's going to be all right. All we want to do now is get home as soon as we can."
Friends and family had travelled with the couple to attend the wedding, which was held at the €275 a night hotel on Wednesday.
Its location on the palm-fringed beach of Causarina, close to the lively bars and clubs of Malindi, makes it a popular spot for weddings and honeymoons.
The British couple had planned to stay at the hotel until Thursday, but Mr Seaman said they would return home as soon as his wife was fit to travel.
