A 25 year old German tourist was swept out to sea when walking with his girlfriend on the seashore near Doolin, Co Clare, yesterday morning.
The man is understood to have slipped off some rocks into the water when walking at Faunmore Point at about 11.45 a.m.
The tide carried him out from the shore.
An Air Corps helicopter from Finner, Co Donegal and a Marine Emergency Services helicopter, from Shannon, took part in a search, as did the lifeboat from the Aran Islands.
