Danish tourists on a golfing holiday have described how they chased aarmed man through Limerick streets after witnessing him carrying out a vicious attack on a street drinker.

The attack happened at 8 p.m. on Saturday on Denmark Street. One of the tourists, Mr Borge Mouritzen, brandished his golf club at the man, who threw his knife away and fled. His friend, Mr Bo Bloch, said they had just arrived back from a golf outing in Kilkee, Co Clare, and each took a golf club and gave chase.

"We followed him through two or three streets for 400 or 500 metres. He stopped three young boys and asked them for money and showed them he was wearing a gun inside his trousers. When we got this message that he had a gun, we stopped chasing him."

"There were five of us watching the incident from the (hotel) reception," said Mr Bloch.
