Six people were taken to hospital after a tour bus crashed on the Stillorgan Road in Dublin yesterday afternoon.

The double-decker, with 40 tourists on board, mounted a kerb and crashed into a pillar and railings outside a housing complex on the in-bound carriageway near the Belfield flyover.

The bus had been on the return leg of a day trip to Co Wicklow and south Dublin under Dublin Bus's South Coast Tour service.

The driver, three British passengers and two pedestrians - a husband and wife from the locality - were taken by ambulance to St Vincent's Hospital where they were treated mainly for cuts and bruises.

All but two of those injured had been discharged from the casualty department last night.

A spokesman for Dublin Bus said it had yet to establish the cause of the accident but an inquiry had been launched.

"We haven't had a chance to speak to the driver yet. Until we do so and until we examine the bus, we can't draw any conclusions," he said.

The bus, which had to be removed by crane, is to be examined by both company officials and the Garda.

Motorists endured some disruption for a number of hours as in-bound lanes were closed off for safety reasons.
