Trade union leaders are to meet the Northern Secretary, Dr Mo Mowlam, today to discuss a "Framework for the Development of Social Partner ship in Northern Ireland". The framework proposals have been drafted by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions.
They are aimed at promoting reconciliation and better industrial relations in the workplace, as part of an overall plan to promote peace, job-creation and inward investment. The unions will be anxious to find out the thinking of the British government in the wake of its "Fairness at Work" proposals. Under these, employers will have to recognise trade unions where 40 per cent of employees want union representation.
The vice-president of ICTU, Ms Inez McCormick, and general secretary, Mr Peter Cassells, will lead the delegation.
