Gardai are being given the authority to switch off traffic lights at key bottle-necks during next week's Galway Races in an effort to alleviate traffic congestion. Delays of 40 minutes have been experienced in the city this week and yesterday gardai warned motorists of further traffic restrictions during the racing festival.
The Headford Road roundabout will be manned by gardai throughout peak periods and they will be able to switch off the lights there whenever traffic builds up. Motorcycle officers will be monitoring the other roundabouts in the city.
