Translink has placed orders for nearly 200 new buses to upgrade the Northern Ireland fleet, it was announced today.

They are the first of 350 that will be ordered as part of a £48.4 million government investment announced by the Department of Regional development in December.

The buses are due for delivery early next year with the remaining 160 within three years - substantially reducing the average age of the Translink fleet.

Philip O'Neill, Translink general manager bus services, said: "We are extremely pleased to announce initial details of this major order for the bus fleet of Northern Ireland.

"This investment is great news for our passengers. Quality buses are an essential part of any journey and the introduction of these new modern buses demonstrates our commitment towards delivering a quality public transport system for everyone."

The orders are made up of 60 Goldline single deck vehicles being manufactured by Scania Irizar, 60 mini buses being manufactured by Optare and 70 double decker buses from Volvo Alexander.

Translink said companies were currently tendering for over 120, 12 metre low floor vehicles for town and city services across the province.

All the new vehicles meet requirements of the Northern Ireland Disability Discrimination Act, with mini buses and double deckers being low floor models allowing easier access for the disabled, order people and families with young children.

Mr O'Neill added: "Fitted with features like digital CCTV, anti-lock brakes and air conditioning, these state of the art buses will have a significant impact in the delivery of a modern, safe, high quality public transport system". ends
