A Cork man, Mr Daniel McCarthy (29), has been presented with the 1997 Securicor Courage Award. He had a heart transplant seven years ago after years of illness. Since then he has gone on to represent Ireland in the European Transplant Games. Mr McCarthy runs a pub in Rostellan in east Cork. He was presented with his award yesterday by Mrs Jennifer Guinness, one of the judges. The nomination cited his courage in overcoming 21 years of illness and "his unceasing work promoting the use of donor cards, fund-raising and, above all, the example he set to those who have undergone transplants".
