Over €1.4 million is to be allocated to new transport projects in Waterford and Limerick city, it was announced today.
The money is to be spent improving traffic flows in both cities by removing pinch points and providing better access for buses and taxis. It also aims to create new or better routes for cyclists and pedestrians.
In Waterford some €770,000 will be spent on completing a bus corridor along the quays aimed at distributing through traffic onto the new bypass. New signs and information boards will be constructed at high pedestrian flow areas.
While in Limerick, €692,000 is earmarked for the completion of a new bus lane along Ballinacurra road which is expected to improve journey times into the city centre by up to 10 minutes. The money will also be used to upgrade pathways, improve road safety and provide real time passenger information in the future.
The funding has been allocated through the National Transport Authority under the Regional Cities Accessibility Programme.
Speaking at the announcement Minister of State for Transport Alan Kelly the investment is designed to enhance and make both cities more “transport friendly”.
