This year’s IMMRAMA Festival of Travel Writing in Lismore, Co Waterford, will offer audiences a glimpse into the political backdrop behind the troubled images emerging from Syria, one of the organisers of the festival has revealed.
According to IMMRAMA administrator, Jan Rotte, Dublin travel writer Mary Russell will give an insight into Syrian life when she discusses her latest book, My Home is Your Home, about her experiences in Syrian cities such as Damascus, Aleppo, Homs and Hama.
Among the other writers attending this year’s festival is the founder of the Lonely Planet Tony Wheeler, who will talk about how he and his wife Maureen set up Lonely Planet Publications in 1973 to publish an account of their overland journey from London to Sydney.
Also appearing at this year’s festival, which opens on June 7th, is Colin Thubron who has written about his travels in Russia, Siberia, China and Tibet, and Jan Morris who as James Morris covered Hillary and Tenzing’s conquest of Everest.
To mark the 10th IMMRAMA, the organisers asked Belfast travel writer Paul Clements to edit a collection of 1,000-word pieces by 20 of the writers and artists who have appeared at IMMRAMA over the decade, detailing their festival experiences.
