Gardai are investigating allegations that shots were fired at Travellers camped illegally in a field near Shankill, Co Dublin.

Between six and seven shots were fired at the Ferndale Hill encampment on Friday night, according to the two Traveller families living there.

Ms Kathleen Hourigan, a community worker with the Southside Travellers Action Group, said the families were "petrified" and afraid to leave their homes.

She said the families had received verbal abuse from members of the settled community before the attack.

Ms Hourigan also accused gardai of harassment by conducting a number of searches at the site. The encampment was one of three in the south Dublin area which was targeted in a series of dawn raids on Saturday aimed at recovering stolen goods.

A Garda spokeswoman confirmed they had taken statements from a number of Travellers in relation to the alleged attack. However, "there was no damage caused, no injuries and no evidence yet of shots fired".

In an "unlinked operation", she said, up to 50 gardai conducted searches in the Shankill-Stepaside area for stolen property. No such items were recovered.
