Some 450,000 schoolchildren have left their schoolbags at home today to participate in the 9th annual Tree Day.

The campaign is designed to increase awareness in children of the importance of trees to the environment.

The children will spend the day learning about trees, and more than 100,000 will have the opportunity to take part in guided woodland walks at over 120 locations across the country.

It is intended that every child that leaves primary school will have spent eight full days of intensive exposure to trees and will have gained knowledge, understanding and an appreciation for trees and the wider environment.
