Cricket:Marcus Trescothick says he is "getting closer" to making himself available for England again — but will still not rush back into international cricket.

The Somerset opener has not played for England since leaving the Ashes tour of Australia last November due to a stress-related illness.

The 31-year-old has concentrated on county cricket this year but hopes to return to the England fold in the near future, even though he accepts he may not be selected.

Trescothick told the Mail on Sunday: "Of course I'd love to play for England again and watching them this summer has sometimes been painful for me.

"I'm not ready yet, but I have made strides since the start of the season. I am improving and I'm certain I'm getting closer."

Trescothick also pulled out of a tour of India in February last year and he accepts he must be prepared to travel again if England are to recall him.

He added: "Clearly, if I want to continue my career I have to undertake another tour.

"But for now, if and when I get back to full fitness and I think I am okay and ready to play, I'll make myself available for England.

"If they don't pick me, that is just tough."
