Tickets for this weekend's Trinity Ball - an annual, black-tie event for Trinity College Dublin students, staff, alumni and friends - were the fastest-selling in recent memory, with all 6,000 sold out a full three weeks before the event.

The ball, which began last night and was due to continue into the small hours of this morning, boasted a line-up of more than 20 Irish and international music acts on four stages. Bands scheduled to play included Ash, CSS, The Blizzards, Aslan and Delorentos. Several acts, including Busy P, Dr Lektroluv and Boys Noize were set for the dance stage.

Trinity Students' Union entertainments officer Barry Murphy said most of the €76 tickets were sold to Trinity students, who usually stayed until the very last act had left the stage.

"There's something for everyone so I don't think many people go home early," he said.

"Many people go on partying after around the city - I know I've never gone home early in my three years there."

Those planning to travel to other events this weekend might face rainy weather and a few obstacles on the roads as the Focus Tour of Ireland Cycle Challenge moves into it's second and third stages.

Cyclists will be pedalling from Cavan town to Galway city on Saturday and then continuing on their way to Kilkenny on Sunday.

Meanwhile, tickets for one of the most anticipated - and expensive - concert dates of the summer remained available after one day on sale, though promoters of Barbra Streisand's scheduled stop at Castletown House, Co Kildare, said the event would probably sell out over the weekend.

The promoters say they are considering expanding capacity for the July 14th concert.

Tickets for this event are selling at €193.50, €270.75 and €551.75.
