Ms Linda Tripp emailed Ms Monica Lewinsky on October 27th last year telling her to leave her alone, Joe Carroll reports from Washington.

"From now on, leave me alone. Don't bother me with all your ranting and raving and analysing of this situation," she told Ms Lewinsky.

"And don't accuse me of somehow `skewing' the truth - because the reality is that what I told you is true.

"I really am finished, Monica. Share this sick situation with one of your other friends, because frankly, I'm past nauseated about this whole thing. LRT."

Ms Lewinsky replies 10 minutes later.

"That's fine with me, Linda. I will respect that.

"I would only like to ask that I have your assurance everything I have shared with you remains between us. You have given me your word before, but that was when we were on good terms. Can I still trust that?"

This exchange is puzzling as Ms Tripp had been using Ms Lewinsky to learn details of her relationship with President Clinton.

It is not clear why at this point Ms Tripp is apparently trying to end her own relationship with Ms Lewinsky. But the relationship survived this attempt by Ms Tripp to break it off. Weeks later, Ms Tripp is still taping conversations with her younger colleague.
