Trócaire's 30th anniversary Lenten campaign will highlight the search for justice of the Maya people of Guatemala.
The Maya people are trying to bring the perpetrators of genocide to court. During the genocide in Guatemala from 1981 until 1982, 100,000 people were murdered by the army and paramilitary groups.
Attending the launch in Dublin today were Trócaire chairman Bishop John Kirby of Clonfert, Bishop Ramazzini of Guatemala, and Mayan children Akacia Bantim (8) and Talah Isfaq (7).
Lent is Trócaire's traditional fundraising period - with more than 1.2 million Trócaire boxes distributed through churches, schools and households in Ireland. Last year, people contributed more than €0 million to Trócaire, allowing the agency to fund 510 projects in 55 countries worldwide.
Since 1973, the Irish people have contributed over €110 million to Trócaire during the Lenten period. Over the past 30 years, more than 7,000 projects in 60 countries worldwide have been funded by the Irish people via Trócaire.
