At least 15 people were killed when a Syrian army fuel tanker truck overturned at a Syrian-Lebanon border post and burst into flames, destroying several nearby vehicles.

A witness said he counted 15 charred bodies at the checkpoint on the Beirut-Damascus road. Security sources said at least 18 were killed, while hospital sources said 27 were injured.

The witness said the fire, which stopped traffic passing through the main land crossing between the two countries east of Beirut, had been brought under control.

He said the truck had been heading from Syria into Lebanon, where about 20,000 Syrian troops are based.
