A Dutch trucker was remanded in custody yesterday on a charge of dangerous driving arising out of a collision on Wednesday in which a taxi was written off and its driver seriously injured.
Rudi Stolk (28), a long-distance driver for a Rotterdam-based firm, appeared in Dublin District Court charged with dangerous driving at Tara Street on December 28th.
Garda Stephen Finn said witnesses would allege that Mr Stolk's lorry broke a red light and collided with the taxi which had the right-of-way. The taxi-driver had to be cut out of the vehicle and was in hospital with serious injuries. A passenger in the cab was also injured.
The lorry was seized for technical examination and Mr Stolk held in custody as he did not reside in this jurisdiction. Gardaí did not object to his release providing a substantial cash bail was provided.
Mr Stolk told the court, through an interpreter, that he did not have any money to put up bail but his firm could be contacted.
Judge Timothy Lucey set his own cash bail at €1,000 and remanded him in custody to appear in Cloverhill District Court on January 5th.
