Italian Jarno Trulli has been disqualified from fourth place at yesterday's US Grand Prix after his Jordan car failed a post race technical inspection.
"The stewards of the meeting decided to exclude the car from the official race classification," organisers said in a statement.
Trulli was penalised after a post-race inspection of his car found excessive wear on one of his skid blocks, leaving it below the minimum thickness.
The Jordan team, who would have gone fifth in the championship standings, announced later that they would appeal against the decision.
It was not known when a final decision would be announced and the race results remained provisional pending the appeal.
If confirmed, the stewards' move will lift Jaguar's Eddie Irvine to fourth, Sauber's Nick Heidfeld to fifth and Jordan’s other driver, Frenchman Jean Alesi, to sixth.
The change will also affect the championship standings, lifting Jaguar level with Benetton in seventh place on 10 points and dropping Jordan back to fifth equal with BAR on 17.
